1975 - Old Port of Miami in foreground, Government Cut, Watson and Dodge Islands

Miami, Florida

View looking due east. The old port as been leveled in preparation to be filled in. Now the site of the new arena. As Charlie Rice states below in the comments, this was also the site of the U. S. Navy's Submarine Chaser Training Center during World War II.

Remember parking along the causeway and putting your lawn chair in the surf? I remember watching the "Tall-ship Parade" in 1976 along the causeway.

Thank you for that great information, Charlie. Perhaps someday we'll get an image of the SCTC to put up here, though images of facilities during wartime were prohibited or restricted.

That is also the location of the Submarine Chaser Training Center during World War II. According to Theodore R. Treadwell's book "Splinter Fleet,"over 25,000 officers and 57,000 enlisted men received their training at the SCTC. By 1945 it was Miami's biggest business, using a dozen piers on the Bay and ten hotels along Biscayne Boulevard. The SCTC's commanding officer was Lt. Cdr. Eugene F. McDaniel of Virginia.

The blimp is on the far left out of the photo. It is in another photo taken on this same helicopter flight.

In the big white square on the right would be the AA Arena today. The Freedom Tower, the former location for the Miami News, is visible on the right and is still standing. There's also a much higher bridge into the Port of Miami on the right side today. I was told that the rail into the port is still used exactly once a year... for when the circus has to board a boat to go overseas. The old drawbridge bridge is still there but pretty much abandoned. The ships docked at the Port today would make these little ones look like tugboats.

There used to be 5 or 7 piers in this area. The first three were used for cruise ship passenger's or large Naval war ships. I used to go with my family to see the ships when they were in port. Some time around the early 60's. Sorry I could not find a better picture of that time to comment on.
