Welcome back in time to a visual treat of old sights from when we were young during great times in South Florida. This site is free, we're open 24/7/365 and you can view the images and read the comments in the comfort of your home or office anywhere in the world with internet access. All of the photo galleries and the photos below are dedicated to those of us Baby Boomers who grew up in Miami and South Florida in the 1950's and 60's; to the members of America's "Greatest Generation" before us who served during World War II training at numerous military facilities in South Florida and returning to settle here after the war; and to those hardy folks who lived in South Florida before them because they were the true pioneers of this area. Virtually all of us thought the Miami area was an absolutely great place to grow up and I'm fed up with reading garbage written by folks who say that Miami was "nothing but a sleepy little town in a swamp that was dead in the summer" until they arrived decades later and built it into today's major overcrowded county with a population of 2.56 million people. The photos in these galleries and the comments sent by viewers will help to dispel inaccurate statements by newcomers who have no idea of what life was like in Miami's earlier days.

Hi, I grew up in Hialeah, and went to Flamingo Elementary in the 90’s. To this day, I cannot find any historical images of the school, or any articles mentioning the first (or any) principal. Does anyone have anything on my humble little elementary school? Thank you.

Was shocked to find out that Shenandoah Presbyterian Church was demolished last October. Founded in 1927, the 1950 structure in Little Havana (8th St) was on target to be listed as a historical structure...but too little, too late. My father was an associate pastor there from 1967 - 73.

Leticia Callava was on T51 (Telemundo). Guillermo Benites started at Canal 23 (Univision), and remained for 24 years, with Alina Mayo Azze being his co-anchor. He died in 2016. Interestingly enough, prior to that, both Callava and Azze were female co-anchors at 51. To make matters even more confusing, the reporters kept moving between the two stations. If Guest were not speaking of a Hispanic reporter/anchor, I am still betting on Ann Bishop. She was iconic during that era, and an extremely good speaker. First female co-anchor in an major American market. Things have not only been bizarre in the Hispanic broadcasting portion of Miami news...the major network affiliates totally switched around in the last fifteen years, I believe.

It has been just over THIRTY years since my last visit to Miami. YET, I keep up with it. Curbed Miami was a great source, until they stopped with their Miami articles about a month ago, or so. Hope that they come back.

I'm just guessing it was farther to the west. "Attractions" tended to be in the outskirts. With 8th eventually turning into Tamiami Trail... (shot a 16 mm student film out there in a roadside park in 1984)...who knows? This preacher's kid is appalled by that freakish Orlando attraction - "The Holy Land Experience." Google it - your skin will crawl.

Judi, the most likely person to know is Jeff. I love a challenge, and tried numerous Google attempts. No luck. If I had a (paid) account with the Miami Herald, I'd check their early 50s archives for articles or ads, particularly around the holidays. Do you have a cross street on SW 8th Street? It could be anywhere from downtown to the edge of the Everglades. Also, can you be any more specific about what kind of things were in the park? One of my contacts is ripshin "at" excite.com. (I don't know how this system accepts e-mail addresses in comments...) Feel free to provide me with any info. Jeff? You know?

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Boyd had put photos of my old rock concert ticket stubs from Hollywood Sportatorium on the site a few years ago. He was trying to get the word out about how many great bands had played there over the years and to not let the memories fade. I'm glad I was able to make a tiny contribution to this wonderful web site. I thank him for his tireless hard work.

I need to know the name of the Miami female evening news anchor in the late 80's/early 90's. She was NOT YOUNG, she had GRAY hair, was hefty and a great speaker. Not sure but I think she was let go bbecause of her age which of course was not the reason given. Her name? Thanks.

Dear Visitors: Our dear friend Don Boyd passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 27th after battling pancreatic cancer. Those of us who got to know Don will miss him deeply. In speaking with his wife (Karen) this evening, she was unsure who would be administering this site in the future, but was open to suggestions. If you have the time, inclination and desire to keep this site up-to-date as best as possible, please contact Karen through oldmiamimemories(at) gmail (dot) com - perhaps you can be the helping hand she will need.
