Fruit of the Rose

Southern Vancouver Island

The fleshy, sometimes edible, berrylike “fruit” of the rose (actually the floral cup) is known as a hip. The hip is typically red-to-orange, but ranges from dark purple to black in some species. Rose hips begin to form in spring, and ripen in late summer through autumn.~ Absolute Astronomy
