Acorn

Southern Vancouver Island

Southern Vancouver Island is dotted with oak trees and in the fall the acorns are a favourite treat of all variety of birds and animals. This day we were watching wood ducks feast on them and remarking on what great digestive systems they must have! Acorn facts: According to Greek legend, acorns were a staple food of the Golden Age. They were used as an inferior coffee substitute during the American Civil War. They are high in carbohydrates, and were used as food primarily during times of famine. They are an important source of food for local wildlife. ~ foodrefernce.com
