Chemainus River Bridge

Chemainus River

The Chemainus River Bridge is a two lane wooden structure bridge that crosses the river between Chemainus and Crofton. I've always wanted to photograph this bridge because of it's unusual design and today seemed like a good one to check it off my 'to do sometime' list. Next on the list is to research the history of the structure...for another day.

I used to meet my first girl friend Leslie who's family lived near by in the 1960's. I spent many happy times on that bridge.

Its a Howe Truss. The design was developed in the 1840s and is still being built. Its what's underneath the siding of most covered bridges in North America. For some reason the ones in BC were seldom sided or roofed. I know of one in Princeton and another in Cawston. There's a 3 span covered one just west of Keremeos, BC.

Nice shot, now I have a reason for another trip to the island.

Oh, I love this bridge....love the lines and looks like someone definately knew what they were doing when they built it! Looks very sturdy!

a wonderful bridge... very romantic... could have suited Maryl Streep and Clint Eastwood...

The repeating pattern of the wood has captured my interest. Nice bridge.
