Mom and the Kids

Southern Vancouver Island

I went back to visit the Wood Ducks and saw the female with her ducklings swimming on the far edge of the pond. As with most 'kids' there is always one that 'goes to his own drummer' and there was a fifth duckling far ahead of the group doing his own thing. The fifth duckling didn't show up in any of my later shots so I'm not sure if he made it back to join the family or not. Wood Duck facts: Like other perching ducks, Wood Ducks nest in trees. Upon hatching the young use their sharp claws to climb up the inside of the nesting cavity to its entrance, then jump and flutter to the ground, generally landing unharmed. The female guides them to the nearest water, where they will spend the next eight to nine weeks hunting for food together.
