Station dedicated to firefighter Robert “Casey” Lamme, killed 30 years ago saving a motorist

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue on Tuesday will dedicate Airport North Station 59 to Robert “Casey” Lamme — a firefighter killed helping a motorist on the Palmetto Expressway on April 26, 1981.

“We are honored to be dedicating this station to Firefighter Lamme. Thirty years ago this week he made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to save someone in need,” said Fire Chief Herminio Lorenzo.

Lamme, 34, a Hialeah native and 10-year veteran of the department, had stopped to help a woman trapped in a burning car. Lamme was off duty and returning home from dinner with his wife, Susan. He had her pull over and dashed to the burning car. But the vehicle had hit a power pole and Lamme was electrocuted when he touched the car’s door. The woman he tried to save survived.

The dedication ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the station at 5680 NW 36th St. Lamme’s loved ones are expected to attend.

“Station 59 was the perfect choice for this dedication because Firefighter Lamme spent most of his career at Miami International Airport,” Lorenzo said.
