NGC_891: Edge-on Galaxy in the Constellation Andromeda

Imaged from Beckwith Township, Ontario, Canada.

NGC891, in eastern Andromeda, lies almost exactly edgewise. It lies roughly 30 million light-years from Earth, which is close by cosmic standards, NGC891 sports a total visual magnitude of 9.9. However, some of the galaxy’s light is blocked by a thick dust lane, and the rest is spread across an area about 12 by 1.5 arc minutes in extent. Consequently, NGC891 suffers from low surface brightness.

Nikon D7200 (unmodified); Sky-Watcher ED80 Pro Refractor and a Tele Vue 0.8x Reducer/Flattener @ 480mm / f/6; Nikon 1.7x Teleconverter making for 816mm, f/9.2; ISO 1600; IDAS LPS-P2 Filter; Celestron AVX mount; guided with SSAG; and PHD2; 14 x 5 minute subs (total integration is 70 minutes).

Shot in RAW; converted to 16 bit TIFFs; stacked using DSS; processed in Pixinsight and Photoshop CC.
