Arthur Mee, in The King's England (1949), describes it thus: "A handsome place... at the end of a fine avenue of elms, and it is said that in 1605 many friends of the Gunpowder Plotters were gathered here when Robert Catesby's servants brought the ill news that Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators had been arrested."
