March 7.

Would like some advice on settings for capturing dragonflies in flight please.
It was late afternoon, bit contrasty with foliage, trees etc.

Geesh, I'd love to get a shot like this! Can't see any reason to complain, great goin'. These things can be hard to get sitting still, much less in flight.
Guest 15-Mar-2006 00:46
Dont think you need any:-))) awesome, looks like hes wearing a crash helmet:-)
Guest 11-Mar-2006 08:08
wow this was a good catch!!
sorry can't give any advice about small critters....i only shoot species that are at least above 4 feet tall. :)

GMV - a winning shot! Well done.

I can't advise from personal experience but know that flash can help freeze the action, if that's your aim.
Susan 08-Mar-2006 07:28
btw, I think that's a prize winning shot as it is!!
You should be entering your work in comps and exhibitions.

Wow!! this is a great capture.
As for advice, I think your doing well without any hehe. I dont mind the wing blur at all, it adds to the image and feel of movement. If your after a complete freeze, well shutter speed is the clue (at 1/800s you froze the body) consider sports photography eg, car racing...look at some of their shutter settings, and iso. In 'film' photgraphy, 800 - 1600 iso would be the go. I don't know how 'iso' goes with digital, but try a faster shutter (1600)..good luck ;-))

Fantastic image! It's hard enough to follow them with binoculars much less get this super pic. GMV S

I think maybe you should be giving the dragonfly lessons, not taking them. :-) Great capture, I know that was a tough shot!

Wonderful lighting and sharpness on the head. I also love the black background, the movement of the wings...

Gorgeous dragonflie and composition!
Guest 07-Mar-2006 15:43
I'd love to give adviCe but I don't have any experience yet of taking flying dragon fly. I think that's quite dificult. This is actually a nice capture of a flying dragonfly. I like how the light focused on the head and his wings at still visibly on move despite of the subdued light :)
Guenter Eh07-Mar-2006 15:34
I saw the famous dragon fly shots of Laine - but this one is still living! Outstanding shot Sheila!
