I managed only one shot of this fruit fly back last summer. No, these are not the tiny little flies that swirl around ripe fruit in your kitchen! These are a different sort of fly. Most of them have brightly coloured eyes and bodies, with strongly patterned wings. I think this is likely Campiglossa albiceps, a common fly that lays its eggs on asters.
