Identifying butterflies and moths is a skill that I have not yet developed and so I will leave the identification of this insect to others. What I do know is that this was one beautifully coloured butterfly/moth and it was busy drinking the nectar from each blossom it landed on. Butterfly/Moth facts: Their food is consumed through a small little pipe, like a straw, which is coiled under their head most of the time, and adult moths/butterflies use it to suck up nectar from plants. This straw is called a ‘proboscis’ and it is the reason these insects are known for their completely liquid diets, it would be tough trying to suck up solid food through a straw! You will find these insescts either sucking up nectar from all sorts of different flowers, or using their long proboscis to drink up water out of shallow ponds. ~ The Butterfly Site
