The Pussy Willows are in bloom!

Southern Vancouver Island

Every February I watch and wait for that first sighting of pussy willows, a sure sign that spring
is on the way. This year, the big tree down by the pond came through again; it's absolutely covered with silky, white buds. Pussy Willow facts: Pussy willow trees are native to wetlands of Canada
and the eastern U.S. There are male and female pussy willow trees. The male catkins are showier,
and it is the branches of the male trees that are sought for their "pussy willows." Before the
male catkins come into full flower they are covered in fine, greyish fur, leading to a fancied
likeness to tiny cats, also known as "pussies". The catkins appear long before the leaves, and are
one of the earliest signs of spring.
