Male Northern Harrier Hawk

Vancouver Island, BC

We happened upon this bird while on a drive around the island and came home not too sure about the type of bird. We put out a call to our birder friends (thanks for the feedback!) and consensus is that it is a Male Northern Harrier Hawk. We were quite surprised as we thought we had seen these hawks before and they were much darker in colour. We found out that this is one of the few raptors in which the sexes look quite different: the male is white below with a light gray back and hood, the female is mottled in browns.
