1940's - military aircraft maintenance during World War II inside the Coral Gables Coliseum

Douglas Road (SW 37th Avenue), Coral Gables, Florida

From the ERAU website: "Performing maintenance on aircraft inside the Coliseum in Miami. Aircraft pictured are a North American AT-6 (SNJ, Harvard) on the left and a Naval Aircraft Factor N3N on the right." Embry-Ridde Technical School operated in the Coliseum on Douglas Road in the 1940's during World War II. Classes taught Elementary Engines, Basic Instruction and Electrical Overhaul. These classes dealt with starters, batteries, magnetos, and generators.

The Coliseum was designed by Anthony Ten Eyck Brown and planned by Coral Gables founder George Merrick. It opened in 1927 and served as a 7500-seat auditorium, an Embry-Riddle Technical School teaching military aircraft maintenance during World War II, a bowling alley in the 1950's and 1960's, an ice skating rink and a health club during its existence. It was destroyed in 1993 for redevelopment as an urgently needed shopping center because we don't have enough in Dade County.
