Thank you to Stan Meade for contributing this great old image and Jeff Levine for identifying the source of the photo as the Wometco Theatres files.
The 1000-seat Florida was across from the Olympia Theatre, now the Gusman Center, and was originally opened at the Hippodrome Theatre starting around 1915. It was the second theatre with the Hippodrome name in downtown Miami. It closed in 1930 and reopened as the Rex Theatre in 1931, operated by Paramount Pictures, Inc. through their subsidiary E. J. Sparkes. The Rex closed in 1947 and a new building erected as the Florida opened in 1948 so the above photo depicts it shortly after reopening. It closed for good in 1974.
