School History: "Shadowlawn Elementary School was build in 1926 in one of the first suburbs of Miami. The population then was predominately white middle class middle class. Originally Shadowlawn was a two-story "L" shaped building, housing 300-400 students grade 1-6. In the beginning there was no cafeteria, students brought their lunches and ate outside on picnic tables built by their fathers. The custodian and his wife (the Cafeteria Manager) lived in a portable made into a home on the school ground. Shadowlawn was integrated in 1963/1964 school year when a couple of black families moved into the neighborhood. With the population increase; portables, relocatables, etc. were "setup" in places around the school.
In 1974 they moved the 5th and 6th grade classes to Edison Middle. Through the years Shadowlawn has been a "learning place" and home for thousands of children form many ethnic backgrounds. Shadowlawn has also provided education to many public officials like Mayor Steve Clark, Mrs. Margaret Johansen and the late Mrs. Eugenia Thomas were PTA Presidents who went on to become Dade County PTA president and Florida State PTA president."
