the Shire Ditch running along the top of the Malvern Hills was attributed to Gilbert de Clare, the 'Red Earl' of Gloucester, in about 1287, during a boundary dispute with the Bishop of Hereford. I'm a history buff and love reading interesting info like that... The dike acts as a nice leading line, the broken part of the dike does not deter ones eye from continuing further into this nice rural scene...
