A freely self-seeding annual with strappy linear leaves.
The most common color found in Tennessee is blue however
it sometimes blooms white, pink or purple. This mass in
Kingston Springs was likely sown as a color mixture by
the owner of the property along Kingston Springs Road. It
can be found in fields, roadsides and waste places all
over Tennessee blooming from April-June. 12"-36" tall.
It often grows as a weed in crop fields, Bachelor's Buttons
(Corn Flower), is now endangered in its native habitat by
agricultural intensification, particularly over-use of
herbicides, destroying its habitat; in the UK it has de-
clined drastically in the last 50 years. It is also how-
ever, through introduction as an ornamental plant in
gardens and a seed contaminant in crop seeds, now natural-
ized in many other parts of the world, including here in TN.
