Good camera for those times. My first D-SLR. Now-days is very popular at secondhand market especially in Russia.

Problems:
-not so good at low-light
-average high-iso performance (but it was quite good at the time)
-moderate ergonomics (if we compare it with Nikon D-SLR`s)

I had the 300D which has after 1300 shots a new shutter. It is doing well now.
But during repair I bought a 30D, The best camera I ever had.
Nice cam to work with, very easy to use and handle.

noiser at high ISO than 1D MARK II/III, I love this camera, great alt and back up.bad thing is I scratched sensor by using "dust-aid" while I was travelling to canada, you know that liquid like eclipse v2 is not allowed on the airplane, so I tossed it in the trash-can.

Bought this camera back in May of 2006. I will never part from it. I've done some amazing shots with it and use it for all of my work currently. It's fast, accurate and the color reproduction is outstanding! Check out my gallery of images athttp://www.pbase.com/jeimuzu

I've read comments about a greenish tint on the 30D's LCD screen. Does it affect your 30D, or is this just an occasional manufactung flaw? There aren't many reports of this, but it does seem to exist at some level...thought I would ask about how pervasive this is before I buy one. Thanks

I presently use a 300D, which I have been very pleased with, but feel the need to purchase a second camera as an upgrade. I recently tried a 30D which a friend had for sale, but it just didn't feel right in my hands, much too large and heavy. After reading some reviews on the XTi, I think that will be my choice. The 30D seems to be more suited for large hands. I didn't like the little on/off switch, either.

I also posted this on the EOS 5D thread... I was trying to compare the Canon to my Nikon D200 but couldn't compare the picture quality with compatible lenses on both. Here is my gallery with photo's of the D200, so please let me know what others think compared to some good Canon galleries?

Es la mejor máquina que he tenido en mis manos después de haber pasado por las compactas, una 300D y una 350D. Pienso quedarme mucho tiempo con ella; por lo menos hasta que la garantía de sus 100.000 disparos se cumpla!!

Great lil camera and a worthy successor to the 10D/20D with much improved focussing system and Digic II processing. Nice to handle and now has many EF-S lenses. Fast startup time is great, as is shot-to-shot time. Pretty lightweight for magnesium alloy body. Feels nice and comfy in the hand. A joy to shoot with and imho, beats the Nikon D200 in most areas. Noise levels are so low even at high ISOs as to be almost negligible.
A real beauty of a camera.
Guest 03-Jun-2007 08:18
No complaints about this camera.

A really nice camera. All you can miss with the 30D is only the full frame...

Just went from a 350D to a 30D, what a camera! Such a more professional feel, better useability, better noise handling, 5 FPS! No regrets!

I had many high expectations when I purchased my EOS 30D. I was surprised to find that it exceeded them all. The image quality is better than I expected, the low-light focusing capabilities, burst capabilities, easy to use controls, easy to understand menu, etc… All around a solid DSLR. I would encourage anyone thinking of buying this camera to go ahead, you’ll love it.

Although I LOVE this camera, there are a few MINOR things I dislike:

1) The small sensor bothers me. It’s great on the telephoto end, making my 300mm lens effectively a 480mm lens, but I shoot a LOT of stuff with a 28mm, which is effectively a 45mm lens.

2) Incompatibility with older Canon Speedlites, including my 540EZ. I believe that it is simply software that Canon could have easily included to allow EZ speedlites to work, but they make money by selling stuff, including their EX line of speedlites. The camera and EZ speedlites communicate with each other, the camera knows it has a flash, the speedlite knows what focal length lens is on the camera, it also knows the shutter speed and the aperture, but it won’t fire in ATTL mode. It will, however, fire in manual mode, so now I just use my EZ speedlite in manual mode.

3) The viewfinder is a little cumbersome with eyeglasses. I know there is a diopter adjustment, but I’m too blind to work without my glasses. It is taking me some adjusting to get used to it, but it is still usable.

4) In bright-light situations (outdoors), the LCD display in the viewfinder is difficult to see. I expected it to have an automatic variable brightness level similar to film EOS cameras I own, but it stays the same dim level regardless of light. I haven’t found a way to manually make it brighter either.

Having said all that, I am still EXTREMELY pleased with the camera. If I had it to do all over again, I would still buy it and be just as enthusiastic about it. I truly love this camera. I thought that I would still shoot just as much film prior to buying this, but I am now anticipating my film usage to drop quite a bit.

One last thought on battery life. I can’t believe how long the batteries last! I bought two extra batteries with it anticipating similar battery life to previous digital cameras I’ve owned, and thought I should have bought more. I think I could have gotten by on just one, two at the most. One battery will last me all day (and then some). The battery could easily run through 500+ pictures.

A friend of mine has absolutely no regrets switching to the 30D from the Nikon D70. He gets cleaner high ISO images, loves the lightning quick AF, and you won't hear this too often, but he actually prefers the exposures he gets from a 30D + 580EX vs the Nikon D70 + SB-800. Here's a couple of concert pictures he took with his Canon gear :>http://canon30d.dpnotes.com/ef-70-300mm-usm-is-concert-photography/

I'm also compiling a list of links to Canon 30D vs XTi / 400D discussions at :>http://canon30d.dpnotes.com/canon-30d-vs-rebel-xti/

Just recently upgraded to the 30D from the 300D. I am very impressed with the performance and quality of the 30D.

A bit weak on auto white balance, and yellowish tone on LCD!
Excellent camera otherwise, highly recommended!

Had the 30D a couple of months now & I'm really impressed with it's speed and quality. A nice addition to my venurable 10D!

It's a great camera capable of delivering utterly brilliant professional results. Certain aspects of the build quality and finish are not as robust as I would like to see but the camera certianly dilvers the goods. The feel is ergonomical and you can really throw this camera around with confidence. Budget for high quality lenses, preferably L-glass or the more exceptional EF-S lenses (10-22, 17-55) as it's crippled with some of the more ordinary kit lenses.

The 30D has my vote. I upgraded from the 10D to the 30D and am ever so glad I did. The improvements made from the 10D to the 20D were not lost and several great new features make it so much easier to work with. Not only does the camera allow in camera B&W, but additional metering modes, picture styles and a massive LCD.

I have been a fan of Canon since my first 35mm A2 and will continue to be in the future with the purchase of the 30D.
Guest 13-Jun-2006 07:39
I have this and took a jump to Canon from Nikon (I only had three so-so Nikon compatible lenses so felt I could switch without pain).

It's a classy camera, sitting somewhere between a Nikon D70s and a D200 (but probably closer to the D200). Images are a little milky and soft with standard lenses, but put L-series glass on this and differences between the 30D and the high end Canons become marginal.

I sold my eight month old 20D and upgraded to 30D. I really like my old 20D, but I love all the upgrades Canon did to 30D!
Guest 24-Apr-2006 22:54
from what I've seen so far here, Canon 30D +17-40 F/4L +70-200 f/4L is the way to go. Nikon D200 has more bells and whistles, but who cares? who will use them? ever?
