Deserts - One Colour


When one travels through desert regions, it will be noticeable there is one colour that stands out and binds together the architecture across this harsh landscape.

These photos were taken in Syria, Egypt, Dubai, Lebanon, Oman and Uzbekistan.

In "Dune", the author, Frank Herbert, talks about desert power. It is difficult to comprehend the extent of how awesome the desert is, unless one is standing in a desert environment, with dry wind whipping sand into one's eyes, and where the summer sunlight is so harsh that the skimpiest of shadows are a sanctuary, and where one finally understands why people, men and women alike, walk around with their heads and sometimes faces, covered, in this region. This is nature's elements at one of its most merciless.

Likewise, the architecture around the Middle East has been influenced by the colours of the desert. One would be hard pressed to guess where exactly these photos were taken, but that is exactly my point, the climate and sand have led to a uniformity in the architecture of these desert towns.

The effect of the gallery as a whole is greater than the effect of any of its parts, Azlin. You make us see this part of the world in terms of its primary coloration, and do so by featuring a common denominator: the color of the desert.
