Bates first began exploring Mount Desert Island in the 1880's on family outings to the area. He served as chairman of the Path Committee of Bar Harbor from 1900-1909 when 25 miles of trails were added to the area. The Bates cairn which I will show in later photos was developed by Bates and is still in use today throughout the park.
