Description:    Double flower rose in a circular frame.
        Wood:Rosewood - East India
Finish:"Flecto" Varathane Liquid Plastic, 91 Clear Satin, would not dry properly, even after two weeks of ideal drying conditions. The tacky, rubbery surface was rubbed with paint thinner. The final finish is Minwax Polyurethane Clear Semi-Gloss Varnish.
        Size:Approximately 8” Dia. X 2” D.
Notes:Inspiration for this piece "stemmed" from the type of wood. It seemed completely appropriate to carve a "wood rose" in "rose wood." Early ideas for a title attempted to capture the reversed order of the words (i.e., "transposition" or "palindrome"). During this time period, the carver happened to watch the movie Mrs. Miniver (1942), in which the train stationmaster asked for - and obtained - permission to name his new variety of rose after his favorite person. The search for a title was over. From published pencil sketches showing the four types of rose blossoms (single blossom, semidouble, double flower, and very double bloom), the double flower sketch was used as a guide for this carving. The circular frame was shaped by hand until it passed the rigorous "rolling test" imposed by the carver. The stippled background was achieved through multiple applications of a spherical head Dremel cutting tool.
