F-4G 69-291

Spangdahlem

The F-4G version was called Wild Weasel, the nickname for for Phantoms tasked with the Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD). As such, this F-4G 69-7291/SP, belonging to 81TFS, displays 26 mission symbols on its intake, gathered during Operation Desert Storm, 6 months earlier. In February 2000, it was shot down as a QF-4 serving with the 82nd ATRS.

This confuses me, because I was the last crew chief on 69-291 before she was retired from regular duty in the USAF at Moody AFB, 347TFW/68TFS. She was an F-4E, not G. I guess since the one you have it 69-7291, and mine was 69-0291, that's the difference. Incidentally, my bird - "Christine" - had two confirmed MiG kills in Vietnam, so she had two large red stars on her variramps (what you're calling the "intake" - the variramps have small holes in it, and is used to slow down air intake for the engines to subsonic when the plane is supersonic).
