These are peculiar crane flies, hard to see because they vanish in front of one's eyes (hence their name). When they fly, they spread all legs wide and seemingly float away, the small wings giving the occasional flap and then vanish even as you look at them. So I was very glad to come across five of these elusive creatures on Wild Parsnip yesterday, more or less sitting still.
