Pyrgotid fly (Sphecomyiella valida)

At home

Found in the garden. A quite unusual looking fly which, apparently, is not often seen during the daytime, but more often around lights at night. Bug Guide says: "Larvae are internal parasites of adult Scarab beetles. Only a single larva develops in each beetle--killing the beetle within two weeks. The female fly is reported to insert eggs into the abdomen of the beetle while both are in flight, generally at night."

Nice find and photos Christine. I've only seen one of these and it came to my moth sheet at night.
