Fruit flies (Eutreta noveboracensis)

These pretty little flies are members of the Fruit Fly family, Tephritidae. These are clearly not the minute little fruit flies that circle around overly ripe fruit in our kitchen! They belong to a totally different group. These flies lay their eggs on and around goldenrods and the larvae burrow into the roots (rhizomes) of the plant, according to Stephen Marshall and Bug Guide.
