Bearberry (Arctostaphylos-uva-ursi)

Bearberry is abundant in the Burnt Lands, and at the moment it is in flower. The flowers range from a lovely pink, like these, to almost white. Bearberry is an evergreen plant, its leathery leaves often found clambering across rocks dry areas. Later on, it will produce lovely red berries which wildlife, including bears, eat.

This is a wonderful photo. Nice light highlighting the blooms and a dark background to make the blooms stand out even further. I was just this evening reading about larval host plants for butterflies and this species was mentioned for the Hoary Elfin. I was wondering what bearberry looked like and what a coincidence that I log on here an hour later and find this photo!
