The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Passau was founded and sculpted in 1683 by Giuseppe Bellotti who came to Poland from Venice.
This way he wanted to thank Virgin Mary for his rescue during the plague in Warsaw.
It was also to commemorate King Jan III Sobieski's Vienna victory over the Turks.
In his work Bellotti was inspired by monument of Madonna from Passau, a town in Lower Bavaria (Germany).
