Half bread and half cake, "Baba" or "Babka" is a sweet, yeast-risen bread with raisins, topped with icing and candied citrus zest.
It is an indispensable component of a Polish Easter feast, in Polish called Babka Wielkanocna.
It is called baba, a provincialism for woman or babka which means "grandma". The cake is always baked in a fluted pan and resembles the skirt of a woman.
