Julian Smith was awarded a Masters Degree by Cardiff University and moved to Ireland in 1968. He is a potter in Kinsale. His work features the figurative and the landscape. He concentrates on the Raku process, which is an ancient Japanese firing technique. Essentially, the work is fired in a gas kiln using copper based glazes. While the piece is still red hot it is removed and placed in sawdust or leaves where it is reduced to bring out the colours.
