In the early 1900's it took 32 horses and mules to pull each combine at harvest time. The barn was an essential building that housed and fed these animals, as well as providing a location for dairy farmers to feed and milk their herd of cows. Styles of barns varied based on efficiency and construction costs. The round barn was not uncommon in this era and a few still survive in the Palouse region of Washington state.
