This male California Quail was as surprised as we were when we first saw him. Fortunately he didn't run off and merely ruffled his feathers, watched us as we photographed him, and then sedately wandered off into the bush. Quail facts: California quail are sedentary birds and seldom travel outside of their home range. Their maximum movements have been recorded at up to 27 km (16.8 miles).
