York
I was given a bit of a photo opportunity treat on Thursday evening – to see the locomotive ‘Tornado’ at York Station leave on a nocturnal test run to Barrow Hill in Derbyshire. This was the first time it had been out on the main line with a full weight behind it.
But Tornado is no ordinary steam locomotive – the express passenger loco was built from scratch, being completed this year. It is the fiftieth member of the ‘A1’ class, the other 49 having been built during 1948 and 1949!
