Yes we do have moles. And we do have an irrigation system.

There was an ice event this past winter that could have caused the suffocation Jim described.

I'll bet he has a lot of moles.

Paul - in MN I have lost grass due to a variety of issues, including snow mold and in snowless years just winter drying out and freezing of the grass. I've also lost it to a snow melt or winter rain followed by a hard freeze causing a layer of cold ice freezing and suffocating the grass.

Is winter turf kill a typical problem for the northern areas such as Minnesota? We have lost plenty of shrubs, mini roses and a loblolly pine but not grass. Our coldest temps are around -20 and when we do get that cold it’s generally only for a week or so. More often than not our annual cold is 0 ish and that’s only for a day or so till I go outside and try to photograph frozen blow bubbles. Paul

Paul - my daughter has the same problem in Minneapolis. It was compounded by a lot of winter kill a year ago, and she never could get the bad areas properly repaired.
She watered "quite a bit" but not enough, and that was expensive as well.

I see some pretty rough and damaged areas, do you have a irrigation system? My lawn suffered horribly this year from the heat and drought and I’ll guess I lost at least 35 to 40%. So the cleanup begins, at least it was the remaining bluegrass that died off. Fescue to the rescue! Paul
