I'm using this lens for six years now and it is still in prime condition, despite nearly always being on my camera body! The build is of such good quality that the zoom and focus actions are still as smooth as ever. Here's the most recent gallery:http://www.pbase.com/gbleek/capecod and there's more in my other galleries (with yet a thousandfold more pictures residing on my harddrives...).

Fantastic lens for the money, this lives on my camera nearly all of the time and produces better results than my Sigma 10-20 which is an ex lens. Great focal range and very sharp with decent build quality. Most of the images in my galleries have been taken using an Canon 20d and this lens.

This lens is quickly becoming my favorite lens I've ever used! The images come out very sharp and very realistic. There isn't much post processing required at all. I was in the fence about buying this lens awhile back, and now I'm asking myself how I ever lived without it. It's a perfect lens for my needs - very versatile for all types of photography!

I just got the 17-70 yesterday and I really like it. It looked very sharp on the camera in the store (a Nikon D80, I have the D50 and love it). I couldn't wait to get it home to my studio and start doing test shots with it so I stopped in town near the college to see what I could find to shoot. It was a gray, cold, windy winter day so I didn't stay out long (can't do much with macro with the plants blowing around like that). I like the images I got though. Even though the conditions weren't ideal I like the sharpness and color and range of the lens. I bought it mainly to cover the wide angle end of things. I can see I will be very inspired by this lens. I can shoot landscape, potraits, macro and any thing inbetween.
When I got it home and started using it I liked what I saw and got a lot of good ideas both for indoor and outdoor.
It is replacing my other Sigma zoom lens, a 28-80 3.5-5.6 macro. One nice thing about the new lens is I don't have to flip the switch on the side of the lens barrel to go into macro like on my old one. I got some interesting short depth of field shots with it though when I forgot to take it out of macro mode.
I can hardly wait for a sunny day now and the leaves and flowers to come out so I can give this new lens a work out. I guess winter days are for studio work.

Excellent lens for the price.
- Very sharp, good color.
- Versatile with the macro capability
- It's not HSM but AF is quiet fast
- Ideal as a walkaround lens on my 40D

Hi all, I wanted to follow-up on my comment from more than a year ago. I still love this lens and use it every time I go out to shoot. I just come back from an incredible adventurous vacation in the Atacama desert of Chile, and all I can say is it got me some great captures again! Check for yourself here:

(there's a best-off album on the bottom, in case you don't have much time)

I brought my 50-150 to the trip as well, which also proved it's qualities, especially as a compact wildlife lens in combination with a Kenko 2x TC.

Update: I have shot around 1000 photos with this lens now.
Eventually I think it seriously lack of depth of field. However, I have decided to keep this lens in the collection as it provides very constant results in terms of quality.
The macro capability is amazinghttp://www.pbase.com/bonfas/nostalgia

I am definitely very happy with this lens. I didn't know how much I was missing before I got this. I highly recommend it!

Superb usability range, great glass quality.
Pretty good macro too!
Recommended!

My only regret with this lens is that I didn't buy it sooner. For anyone considering a Canon Rebel XTi or XT, buy the camera body only and then spend the money for a better lens. I now spend a lot less time post processing my pictures with this lens then I did with the kit lens. Better color, better sharpness, fast focusing. The incredible thing about this camera is that it will focus on anything no matter how close you are to the subject.

Sigma DC 17-70 is one of my favourite lens for my pentax star DS. Visit my gallery of samples with high definition pictures : jpegs with and without corrections for vignetting and distorsion athttp://www.pbase.com/ssz/sigma_dc_1770mm_f_2845

i bought this lens to replace the crappy kit lens with the 20d. I have since added the 10-20 and 70-200 to my collection but still find that I use this lens most of the time, it is capable of some great pics and has a very versatile zoom range, all that is missing is 2.8 right through, but even so I am very happy with it. Lots of pics here

Spent my first week end with this lense and a Canon 30D
I did indoor, no flash testing and I'm quite happy.
you can check here:http://www.pbase.com/bonfas/escapade
I highly recommend this very versatile lens.

In short I can say that I'm very happy with this lens because:
- it has very good image quality (sharpness, contrast, colour)
- it is well-built
- it focusses quite fast and very accurate on my 300D
- it has a very nice macro function

Most importantly: it is a FUN lens to use!!! It feels good in your hand, has a very usefull range and you can zoom in on everything from the horizon to something nearly touching the front lens element... There's nothing I really dislike, although f/2.8 throughout the zoomrange would have been nice of course. ;-)

Sorry - just realised you may be asking about 10D fit etc. It does differ from EF-S in that you can mount it on the older Canon digital bodies. My stepson uses a EOS 300 film body and it fits that fine (obviously you get a vignetted viewfinder image though)
Guest 06-Sep-2006 22:52
Guest: The Canon version is essentially EF-S - it only covers an APS-C size imaging sensor and will vignette on a full frame body. The 18-50EX is the same. In Sigma terminology, DG denotes digitally optimised and DC denotes APS-C digital only - HTH!
Guest 05-Sep-2006 22:27
I'm having the hardest time figuring out if the Canon version of this lens is EF or EF-S.
What about the 18-50?
Guest 10-Aug-2006 22:53
Very sharp indeed - this lens brings out the best in my Canon 20D. Very crisp images even before you start adding sharpening. Good AF as well.....

I purchased this lens to replace the 18-55mm kit lens. I like this lens very much because it is very versatile. The macro capabilities come in handy when I don't need to switch lenses to my Sigma 50mm 1:1 lens. The images come out clearer than the kit lens. A very good lens that's worth its price.

As a walkaround I like it a lot. Very versatile range, speed at wide-end and awesome and rare for this class 1:2.3 macro capability.

I have both Sigmas - 17-70 DC and 18-50 EX (good copy after 2 duds) and I'm still decidig which one to keep. I just returned from vaccation where I exclusively used 17-70 and quite happy with its versatility considering compactness, macro abilities, price and that it's a relatively fast zoom. That's quite a lot of lens for the money.

Build is decent, almost as good as 18-50 EX (Sigma's "L" like designation) , at least a step above than typical Canon fair in this price range (like 17-85 IS). Both Sigmas share same usability downsides - rotating focus ring and slow and noisy (compared to USM) AF motor. On both lens I would rate AF performance on par with older non-USM 50 f1.8 MkII. I had my share of misfocused AF shots and 17-70 (as well as other Sigma) would sometimes balk at low contrast surfaces even in good light. This mostly happens at tele end at widest apreature.

I still think my very good copy of 18-50 EX f2.8 (after 2 bad ones) is sharper, contrastier and crispier than 17-70 at any focal length at wide apretures. When you look at 18-50 EX image (or print) there's almost a prime-type "wow" factor which 17-70 somehow lacks though it's very hard to pinpoint it. Though color tone of 17-70 is definetly more neutral than slightly warmish 18-50. Optically both lens is way better, imo, than 17-85 IS which I also tried fro a week.

Where 17-70 wins over 18-50 EX is price and, yes, versatility - awesome and fun macro capability and extra 20mm on tele. All this while maintaining pretty decent IQ for the price and even having f2.8 at 17-19mm (after which it quickly jumps to f3.5 and up).
Ok, here're few samples (most were shot in RAW and with polarizer):

A very nice lens to walk around with. 17-70 covers my most used range.
