Superb lens , especially if you take price in consideration. Very sharp.

This has been my mainstay sports lens for going on two years now. Extremely sharp edge to edge, even at 200 f/2.8. I use mine routinely with Kenko Pro 300 telextenders to achieve 280 f/4 and 400 f/5.6 reach. This lens, two extenders, and a monopod cover nearly everythin outdoors...although a 300 2.8 is valuable for field sports and fast primes are better for indoor winter sports. But as an all around lens, especially now that the D300 is here, this one is hard to beat.

Great lens. Heavy? Yep. Built like a tank? Yep. Pricey?... Nope not when you look at its replacement (70-200 2.8 AF-S VR). I have heard it's also going out of production this year (2008). Draw backs besides the weight: Noisy. Has a bit of a torque/twist reaction as the motors spin the heavy front elements. Finally is either manual or auto focus. It does not allow for overriding/fine tuning the auto focus as the AF-S lenses do. There is a positive lock out between AF and M.

Its the best tele zoom I ever had. It gives sharp images and has a beautiful out of focus background.
Questo è veramente un obiettivo fantastico. Riproduce immagini nitidissime su uno sfondo di meravigliosa morbidezza. Potete leggere la mia prova qui

I use the push-pull version of this one, which I got extremely cheaply due to it's age. It was the first 'pro' lens I got and it shows in the quality of the pictures- the colour, the bokeh. If you are looking for something sharp, you may need one of the newer versions, but for me this still suffices for work at weddings (especially using flash) and candids. Of course, I'd prefer the 70-200 VR but in terms of picture quality, despite being a little contrasty, this oozes character and has the word 'Nikon legend' written all over it. Most of my photos here were taken with it-

This is a pro-grade lens; in the first month holding this lens, i feel muscle pain (biceps muscle). Now, it is already 4 months using it, i found other lens are too light weight :D
I have no regret fork out USD 810 (buy in Shanghai, China) for this lens.
I have created a gallery shoot with only this lens:

Not the “Perfect Lens”, but close - Nikkor 18-200mm ED-IF AF-S VR DX

I waited 6 weeks for mine to arrive and used it almost immediately at an airshow featuring the Blue Angels. I took about 3 gigibytes of pictures at that show. I used the Nikkor 18-200mm ED-IF AF-S VR DX with a D50 in sports mode to capture the fast moving planes. It was a great day with not a cloud in the sky. When I later looked at the pictures I was dismayed to see significant light fall off or vignetting on the shots taken at 200mm with the lens wide open at f5.6.

This light fall off is the most significant problem I have noticed with this lens. I contacted Nikon and they said it was normal. Since the lens is made for the smaller DX sensor the diameter of the lens is smaller. This causes mechanical shadowing at long zoom lengths with the lens at the wide open settings of f5.6 until about f11. All lenses have light fall off, to some degree, at the edges. When you use a regular lens made for 35mm with the smaller digital DX sensors the fall off is outside the sensor and not seen. The light fall off was especially noticable with the blue/uniform background. If the background was “busy” the falloff would be less noticable.

Vignetting/light fall off is also usually seen on the wide side of zooms like this. I have not seen any with this lens. I do use a Hoya Pro 1/2 thickness filter so that a shadow is not made when shooting wide angles of 18mm - 28mm or so. I saw a technical review of this lens that noted it had significant outer distortion on pictures taken at 18mm but I have not seen that.

Pros

-Light weight for range
-Large range
-Vibration Reduction
-Sharp, crisp pictures with vibrant colors
-Fast Focus with manual focus adjustment ring for fine tuning

Cons ...

I have the AFD version with tripod collar. Focusing is reasonably fast for sports and modelling shoot. It's heavy but I love it when I put it on my monopod.

I have the push-pull version. Slow focusing but still good enough for sports. Great low light lens. Contrasty and VERY sharp.

Fast and sharp, but heavy! Not as fast focusing as the AF-S version, but the "2-ring" is much faster than the old "push-pull" models. All 4 versions of this lens are great.

It has a very good performance, perhaps a bit too contrasted compared to other lenses of it's kind but I like it this way. It wold have been nice that it had IF (internal Focus) for it too be a bit faster in focusing but I have used it in sports like basketball or hokey and I had no problems.
