For the money, this lens is almost impossible to beat... -- sharp, and quick to focus.... Have used it outside and inside; and works well in all situations....

One of the great all-time Nikon lens bargains. 'Nough said.

Much better than my Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 that extra 1.333' stops of aperture really helps.

I bought this lens as I bought Nikon D50. At that time, I didn't have any knowledge about the lens. Actually, 50mm lense is somewhat noncommittal to take a scenery. So I use this lens to take a portrait.

The Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D AF was the firs lens I have bought. I was really satisfied with it for taking portrait photos. In fact that's why I bought it because it was really cheap compared with others lenses and it's a good lens for taking portrait photos.

Here are some examples of photos taken with this lens:

I hope this will help you if you think of buying this lens.

I like this lens much. The AF is loud but who cares. The standard lens gives you opportunity to better framing your composition. If you want to see how works this lens see my pagehttp://www.pbase.com/longhairnation/my_sweet_gear

While I don't normally use this as a walk around lens, one day I used exclusively on hike around a sacred mountain in Japan:-http://www.pbase.com/jameslclarke/hieizan06

James, Don't get me wrong. Nikkor 50mm/f1.8 is an excellent lens. It is also an excellent marker to check on other lenses. For example, people say ??? pro lens is unbelievable. But how much more superior? Comparing it to 50mm/f1.8 will help peole to understand it more practically.
Guest 06-Jan-2007 05:39
I'd love to see how Nikkor 50mm/f1.8 compares to Nikkor 85mm/f1.4, 28-70mm/f2.8ED, 70-200mm/f2.8ED_VR, 105mm/f2.8ED_VR. Which one is the best "optical performer"? Whether they are Zoom or fixed, ED, aperture, grade, rarely concern me...

No idea why my reply got posted 3 times. Sorry!

Ji Fang, it's great that you like your Tamron, but we're talking about the EXCELLENT 50mm 1.8d here. This is akin to a Canon user jumping in on a Nikon thread about Nikons.

Your Tamron, if your talking about the XR Di 2.8, is over 3 times the price of the Nikkor . Why compare the two? I bet you my 85mm 1.4d is sharper and more contrasty than your Tamron, but it's hardly a fair comparison.

Bottom line is, this Nikkor is an excellent bargain for it's price. It can yield amazing photographs, it's fast enough for low light photography, and you can believe the thousands of people who praise the lens over a few people that just like to argue.

I enjoy testing equipments. Here are 4 test shots from Nikon 50mm f1.8 and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8

I reach for this lens whenever I want pictures that look "special", that is, images with a highly blurred background. And does it get sharp when stopped down a bit! No other lens gives you this for so little money. My personal experience with the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D AF is documented at :>http://nikond70s.dpnotes.com/nikkor-50mm-f18-d-af-lens/

And to Jie Fang and others reading this, I too own the Tamron 28-75mm and it doesn't come anywhere near the 50mm f/1.8 in terms of optical performance. Do take Jie Fang's comments with a pinch of salt.

Hi.. we are creating a new site on Nikkor standard lenses, wondering if we can use this picture as illustrative use of the lenses.http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/50mmnikkor/index.htm for those who intends to participate or contribute, please reply using my email leofoo at mir.com.my

Wow... Sharp or not, depend what it is comparing to... If you have digital camera, go to a store, put on the Tamron 28-75mm/f2.8, shoot side by side with Nikkor 50mm f1.8 prime. You will probably see that the Tamron 28-75 is sharper, more contrasty, more saturated in color. The 50mmf1.8 color is on the cold side, not as neutral. But if you decide to buy a Tamron, do enough test to make sure that the image quality on the left and right side is the same.
Guest 19-Oct-2006 02:59
Good lens performance is about more than sharpness it's also about how the lens renders the out of focus regions of the image. A beautiful bokeh is essential for a lens if it's going to create treasured images. And this lens delivers a silky, glowy bokeh that's just fabulous. The only other lens that comes close is the $1600 70-200 VR.
Guest 04-Oct-2006 21:02
This is probably the best lens I own. The 85/1.4 is great, but the 50/1.8 is sharper and more contrasty at 1.8. Plus, you will not find a better F-mount lens for even three times the amount of money.

Finally got this lens after waiting for 3 months... I think it is very sharp even open wide (for me) I guess people say it's soft because the depth of field is so shallow at f/1.8. I noticed that the colour/contrast gets better at f/2.8 or narrower, but still completely usable at f/1.8 if you want the shallow depth of field.

Focal lenth of 50mm on a Nikon dSRL = 75mm so its not really a walk around lens for me, but its a very good portrait, cat, and still life photoing lens.

As for build quality its much better than the zooms around the same price, but the rotating focus ring on AF mode is a bit scary. Solid plastic with a metal mount.

A worthly addition to my collection of glass.

Still waiting for mine (over 2 mounths) there seems to be a shortage of them in Australia... I'll review it once I get it.

You do not have to think. This lens is the best lens that you could get at this price. Nikon quality, very sharp and very fast. A must have for DSLR owners. You won't regret for having it in your bag.Do not forget you will need a fast lens (F1.8 at least) if you shot in low lights.

Excellent inexpensive lens. Incredibly sharp stopped down to f2.8 or below. A bit soft wide open. Great for studio portraits. I have detailed evaluations in my gallery:

Well, I have to admit that 50mm F/1.8 is not an excellent performer wide-open. I can still spot some softness (might have something to do with quality control), but it's not quite a big deal. However, stop it down and it excels. What's more, it's just $100.

50mm F/1.4 is softer than F/1.8 one. But it yields more pleasing color rendition. I'd recommend F/1.8 over F/1.4, unless you are very eager to toss some bucks out of your wallet or shoot portrait/low light a lot.

Bottom line: this is the only lens I wouldn't sell.

Jie Fang writes:

"Nikon 50mm lenses are sharp is probably a misconcept that kept circulating among amature photographers"

With all due respect Jie Fang are you nuts? Just look at the example photos to be found here and tell us this lens is not capable of being amazingly sharp in the hands of the right photographer :)

A little more comments on Nikkor 50mm f1.8, Nikkor 35-80mm f4-5.6, and Tamron 90mm f2.8. I took shots of a page of book (slightly tilted) using the above three lenses, Fuji Provia, FM2, and tripod. I changed object distance to keep similar image size. Aperture are f8 for all shots. I just looked slide under microscope, checked the best focused area. Acutally, it is very hard say conclusively that one is better than another. 50mm f1.8 seems less constrasty. (not suppose to).... But in numerous real scene shootings, the images from Tamron 90mm apparently appeared sharper than Nikkor 35-80. Not sure about 50mm 1.8 since I have already returned it. It did not impress me at all.
Guest 31-Dec-2004 03:13
I owned Nikkor 50mm f1.4, and sold it half year later. Very soft, rarely sharp. I just bought 50mm f1.8, tested against Tamron 90mm 2.8 and Nikkor 35-80mm f4-5.6. 50mmf1.8 is not apparently better than 35-80mm, and certainly not as good as Tamron. I returned this lens a few days later. Nikon 50mm lenses are sharp is probably a misconcept that kept circulating among amature photographers. :)
