The church dedicated to the Santa María de la Alhambra was built on the ruins of a large royal mosque. The new church was designed by Juan de Herrera in 1581. The floor plan is a Latin cross, with six chapels nestling on either side of the single nave. Interesting works of art are kept inside the temple, e.g. the altarpiece by Juan López de Almagro.
