the park is situated about 1/2 mile from the site of the worst industrial accident in US history
a refitted Liberty ship, the Grandcamp loaded with ammonium nitrate for fertilizer to help with European recovery after WW II caught fire & exploded
this 5 ton anchor was hurled to this site from the force of the explosion
almost 600 persons were killed in the explosions, including the entire Texas City Fire Department made up of 28 volunteers
