Propane Tank

The reason it is rusted is that during the October 2004 Wild Fires it began raining hot embers and ash in our area. At that point the fires were less than two miles away.
I was in the backyard hosing down anything flammable and saw the propane bottles for the grill and remembered that they would explode if the temperatures became too hot, so I threw them in the swimming pool. That's how they became rusted. They still work fine.
We were very fortunate that the fire fighters were able to stop the fires about a mile from our house.
We had a big mess to clean up, but were spared the fate of many others who lost their homes and some who lost their lives.

A close shave indeed.

I remember those fires. I was in CA 3 days before they started. Glad your home was spared. That was a horrible fire.

Luckily we don't get wild fires here. Great story and I'm glad you were spared any loss. Great image of this knob.

Blimey! What a momento of a such a terrible time...glad it turned out all right for you and your family Walter, but it's a sobering lesson to us all. Here in the UK, we don't get wild fires very often but we do get floods, and we were very badly affected here in Gloucestershire in summer 2007 - so I know how devastating nature can be. Great shot BTW :o))

very impressive picture, but Walter better leave before you get hurt, look at the devastating bush-fires we had here in Victoria, where people became trapped in a confusing policy, stay or leave, which resulted then in many deaths

Lucky you, and a great find for the challenge.

Sad story. I just hate wild fires. We get them here also since we are on the dry side of the Cascades. Nice photo of the handle though!
