An end of Summer treat. I watch these emerging each Spring
but due to the bloom time, vacations and start of school I
frequently miss the bloom. This year I caught the tail end
of the bloom cycle with several of the flowers in the umbel
already spent. They grow wild along the stream at our home.
Spider Lily is a smooth perennial arising from a bulb. The
leaves are all basal, linear, strap-like, to 2' long by 2"
wide. The flower is borne on a terminal umbel inflorescence
about 18" to 28" tall. They are found blooming in August in
rocky river shoals and wet woodlands. The flowers are 2"-4"
long with spreading lobes, stamen united into wide tube-like
structures with filaments extending well past the lobes.
