HI Rick,How are things going with all.Sheryl and I went to the House of Blues last night in Disney world to see Tesla, they were great they been rocken for 22 years. They do a great cover like sign sign every were a sign, also Modern day cowboy is one of my favorites check it out on youtube.Just after the first song the drummer Troy saw 2- 6 yr old fans up front,he ran down and handed them each a drum stick, the fans cheered on,at the end of the show Pat Travers showed up to join in for the oncore song little suzie. Its not yet confirmed but KIX will tour with Ratt and Cinderella this year.Kix was at the rockolama last year, at a big concert event that will happen again this year. They got the big break but they ended up playing during a huge rain storm, fans out there rushed out to the stage anyway.Well check out Tesla on youtube, there not any different than Led Zep.Keep in touch.Mark

now this IS photography! great in that it reminds me of a fantastic holiday i had in some of these places, depressing in that i never captured anything like this. you really are an advert for Sigma, the american landscape and the term "professional". thank you for reminding me it really isnt about the pixels and the crop factors, but the light and the person behind the viewfinder. thank you.............

You have a great collection of galleries. Since I photograph the southwest, was especially glad to see your work there. Wanted for several years now to go to Death Valley and Mono Lake - but something always came up to stop it. Maybe next year ;-) Fred ps watch those horizons for levelness. I am starting to try stiched panos, but with both the nodual device to be set up and my having a hard time visualizing GOOD composition in the pannos - I find it not easy. Most pannos I see have not rationale for shooting them and the composition is bad - yours excepted.

Hi Rick---love the panoram of NZ!! Am currently a Pansonic FZ-10 user, trying to find a good price on the SD-10.

You have a really good eye for composition, and your technical work is topnotch, thanks for the most enjoyable gallery, and the helpful lens reviews.

I can't remember how I tripped over your site, but my oh my you've got some stunning images. Naming your galleries for the camera or lens you're demonstrating doesn't do justice to the works of art you've produced.

One image in particular http://www.pbase.com/image/22626273/large), is haunting - perhaps the nicest desert image I've ever seen. The contrast of the rock formations against the soft ripples in the sand, the sunrise (or sunset) lighting playing on the sand and rocks, the foreground bushes, every aspect of this image is mesmerizing.

One minor suggestion from a photographer *nowhere* near as skilled as you are, though. Your images could benefit from a little post-processing - especially Levels & USM. I understand you may be presenting the images "as-is" to demonstrate the Sigma SD9/SD10 so forgive me if you're already well versed in post-processing. Using Levels, the blackpoint can be raised to improve the contrast in many of the images. A couple of USM steps help also - a "clarifying" filter of maybe 20%/r50/t0, then an edge sharpener at maybe 100%/r1.0/t2.

Again, thanks so much for sharing these.

Hi Rick,
You have some superbes photographs in all your galleries. I'm impressed of the sharpeness and the light in most the canyon shots. Your panos are very nice aswell.
I make my panoramas with Panorama Maker, ever heard of it? Do you use a pano head? I don't know if it's worth buying or making one as it works pretty good hand held.
What do you think?
Sorry about all those questions, I'm just curious
Regards, Rainer

Thanks...it is hard to gauge the sharpness of the lens/camera combo on the 50-500 with the surf shots given I was panning the surfers. The best gauge is either the moon or the cruise ship - especially the cruise ship. The lens seems to perform better at f9.5 than f5.6. I haven't tested f11 versus f9 that closely except for one shot and there is some but minimal difference. The wide angle were shot with an older lens that i will literally throw away when I get my new ones (next few days). They are not sharp. The macro lenses are very sharp and I am extremely satisfied with them both the newer 105 and the older 50 (which doesn't get that great marks but I can't see any difference). I am VERY satisfied with the 50-500. Next I have the 15-30, the 29-70 and the 70-200 with 2x doubler coming in. Overall I am very satisfied. I suspect I may have some dust in my chamber but need to clean the dust cover one more time before I open it up. It does eat batteries - both aa's and cr's although others have had more success than me. I am told that some of the lack of life on the cr's is because of the amount of mirror lockup I am using. I won't know that for a while. I will be doing a mini review and posting it on dp review around or before New Years day as I want to test the other lenses out and do some more research on battery issues and sensor dust. I am VERY happy with the quality of my images in general.

thanks for the post.

GREAT SURF PHOTOS!

Hi Rick:

I appreciate getting to know the SD9 through your images. So far I can conclude it is an excellent camera for macro shots. It is difficult to make further judgments regarding its sharpness for landscape or portrait photography. It seems that under controlled lighting conditions it does very well. The jury is still out regarding the rest. Are you satisfied with it?
