Homemade Swaging Hammer

This is a modified ball peen hammer for swaging crosscut saw rakers. Old quality ballpeen hammer heads can be found most any place for next to nothing. At the same time, original swaging hammers are quite rare. This hammer was turned down to mimic the shape of the of old swaging hammers. It has been several years since I made this one but I think I started with about a 14oz head and used a carbide bit to turn it down on the lathe. The hammering face is very hard. After the hammer was tuned down, some relief was ground on the back side and weight was added to bring it up to 17oz. Even if it does look like it is expecting, it works very well. I probably could have gotten by without the added weight if I had started with a heavier ballpeen to start with.
