Old Hose

Glen Ridge, NJ

Photography Rule: proper exposure. Old Rule of Art: proper subject. Justification: under exposed to emphasize the late day light illuminatng the aging wood and to show the darkening environment that is the lot of this useless, leaky old hose, which is hardly a proper subject for dignified art.

This image seems properly, in fact beautifully exposed to me. No blown highlights. Details in the shadows. A lovely sense of mood - one feels like they are there. I know the quiet of the place - the way sounds are absorbed by the old wood. I know the warmth of the sun there and feel the humidity in summer. The late day light is not emphasized at all - it is subtly let in, so that we may know and feel the time of day, lending mood, without severely distracting us from the main subject, the hose, and its peaceful existence. This IS art! Art is that which draws mood and emotion from its viewer. I can so sense this place. I can smell it! It gently transports me back to my childhood days and the smell of wood inside my grandfather's garage. It's a beautiful image and so well taken. PLEASE, do find a broken rule here b/c this is truly a lovely, lovely image and I do not want to see it lost from the challenge. I would surely vote for it if you can somehow qualify it. Excellent work! Kudos!!! ~ Lonnit

It is precisely the reason why it should be a subject. A new hose has no character, but this hose has. I imagine if it has been washing horses or the wooden walls/floors as opposed to something less exotic like grass or flowers. Both the texture of the hose and wood would really stand out in a larger higher def picture. Nice. John.
