Only the tough mosquitoes show up at ice out. They are big enough to have enough fat to survive the cold. Some folks confuse them with small birds. You need to watch your small dogs and cats when they are outside. The smaller, weaker, but high volume skeeters show up a few weeks later.
You know better than that. When the weather stays below zero, they only grow fractions of an inch per day. They won't touch the ground until late May. ;-)
